Should you upgrade your CPU or GPU first?

Short answer: Upgrade whichever part sets your lowest frame-rate ceiling. At 4K that is almost always the graphics card. At 1080p on a high-refresh monitor it is usually the CPU. At 1440p it depends on the pair, so check the numbers before you spend. If your socket is a dead end, a CPU swap also costs a board and RAM.

Start with your resolution and the frame rate you want

Two questions settle most upgrade decisions: what resolution you play at, and how many frames per second you want. Resolution loads the graphics card, while the CPU does roughly the same work per frame at 1080p as at 4K. So the higher your resolution, the more likely the GPU is the wall, and the higher your refresh target, the more likely the CPU is.

Two things bend the table. Competitive shooters at low settings give the GPU little to draw, so Valorant or CS2 players are CPU-limited even at 1440p, and upscaling (DLSS, FSR, XeSS) renders at a lower internal resolution, which pushes a 4K build toward the 1440p rows.

Read your own numbers before you buy anything

A calculator estimates; your own PC can tell you the truth in ten minutes with a free overlay such as MSI Afterburner with RivaTuner Statistics Server.

  1. Turn on GPU usage, per-core CPU usage, a frametime graph and the 1% low frame rate.
  2. Play a demanding part of the game you care about for a few minutes at your normal settings.
  3. GPU usage at 95 to 100% means the card is the limiter. If the frame rate is already where you want it, nothing needs upgrading.
  4. GPU usage well below 90% while one or two CPU threads sit pinned means the CPU, or the RAM feeding it, is the limiter.
  5. Drop the render resolution to 50% for a minute. If the frame rate barely moves, the GPU was never the problem.

The budget rule: buy frames, not parts

The best upgrade raises your lowest ceiling the most per dollar, and that is not always the part that looks oldest. Six typical pairs show how it plays out; the linked pair pages carry estimated frame rates per game and resolution.

Ryzen 5 3600 and RTX 3060. In modern AAA games at High the 3060 gives out first at every resolution, so the card goes first. Core i5-12400F and RTX 4070. A split decision: at 1080p the six-core i5 is the mild limiter in AAA titles and a significant one in esports, while at 1440p the 4070 takes over as the limiter. Ryzen 9 5900X and RTX 3080. CPU-bound by a mild margin in AAA at 1080p and GPU-bound at 1440p, so for single-player games at 1440p the card is the upgrade. Core i7-9700K and RTX 2080 Ti. Both parts are from the same era and the socket is a dead end. The card gives out first in AAA at every resolution, while the eight-thread CPU is the wall in esports. Ryzen 7 7800X3D and RTX 4090. GPU-bound at 1440p and 4K, which is the healthy state, and CPU-bound at 1080p, where the card outruns even this processor and frame rates are already in the hundreds. There is nothing to fix; the only upgrade is the top card, and you would only feel it at 4K, as the 7800X3D and RTX 4090 page shows.

The pattern: in AAA games at High, most pairs are GPU-bound at 1440p and above; the CPU matters most for high refresh rates in lighter games, or when it is two or more generations behind the card.

The platform-cost trap

A GPU upgrade is one part. A CPU upgrade is one part only if the new chip fits your socket and your board's BIOS supports it; otherwise the bill is CPU plus motherboard, usually plus RAM when crossing from DDR4 to DDR5, which can double the price and change the answer.

The rule: price the whole platform, then compare it with a graphics card two tiers up. If the card wins on frames per dollar and your CPU is not the limiter at your resolution, the card goes first.

Sell, keep, or wait

Sell the graphics card you replace while it still holds value; GPUs lose the most in the months around a new generation launch, so list it as soon as the new card is tested. Old CPUs on dead sockets sell poorly alone, so bundle the CPU, board and RAM. Keep a part only if it is worth less than the effort of selling, in which case a spare GPU is a useful troubleshooting tool.

Wait if a new generation is weeks away and you would be paying full price for its predecessor. Do not wait for a mythical price drop on a part that is already on sale.

On lifespan, a good CPU lasts five to seven years before it becomes the limiter at 1440p or above, X3D chips longest, while a graphics card typically lasts four to six years at its launch resolution, less if VRAM runs short first.

How the calculator decides what to upgrade first

Every part in a result has its own frame-rate ceiling for the chosen game and resolution: the CPU as fed by your RAM, the GPU, and the display if you set a refresh rate or the game caps itself. The lowest ceiling is the frame rate you get, and the "upgrade first" card looks for the cheapest listed part that lifts that lowest ceiling up to the next one.

If the CPU ceiling is lowest, it finds the cheapest processor whose ceiling reaches within a couple of percent of your GPU's, optionally within your current socket. If the GPU is lowest, it finds the cheapest card that reaches the CPU's ceiling at your resolution. If RAM is starving the CPU it suggests a kit, if the monitor is the limiter it suggests a faster panel, and when all ceilings are within 10% of each other it tells you nothing is urgent.

Is it better to upgrade the CPU or GPU for gaming?

For most people the GPU, because most gaming at 1440p and 4K is GPU-bound and a card upgrade is a single part with no platform cost. The CPU comes first for esports at high refresh rates, when your CPU is several generations older than your card, or when an overlay shows GPU usage well under 90% with a CPU thread pinned.

How do I know if my CPU is bottlenecking my GPU?

Run an overlay while you play. GPU usage well below 90% while one or more CPU threads sit near 100% is the classic sign, especially with a bumpy frametime graph. Confirm it by lowering the render resolution: if the frame rate barely rises, the CPU is the wall.

Should I upgrade my CPU or GPU first at 1440p?

Usually the GPU. At 1440p with High settings, most pairs from the last few generations are GPU-bound, including budget CPUs paired with mid-range cards. The exceptions are old quad-core or six-core chips, and competitive shooters at low settings where the GPU has little to do. Check your exact pair on its pair page before spending.

Will a new graphics card work with my old CPU?

Almost always. Any PCIe card fits any PCIe slot from the last fifteen years, and a fast card on an old CPU still gives more frames than the old card did, just not all of them. Check your power supply's wattage and connectors and whether the case has room.
